Sitting on the stairs, feeling lost, confused and scared, Emma Murphy hit record, and that saved her life. Emma started to film her story, looking for a way out of a life of terror.
A mother of two, married to whom she thought was the love of her life, Emma confronted her partner after finding out that he had repeatedly cheated on her. Emma was beaten, but it wasn’t the first time it had happened. During a year, Emma suffered from psychological terror, a mental torture that made her think she deserved violence.
The constant terror eventually led Emma to speak up: she hit record on her phone, told her story and uploaded the video on social media. Social media saved her life. In less than 24 hours, the video became viral: millions of views. Buy why? So many people related to Emma’s story: everyone knows someone that was, or is, a victim of domestic violence.
What started out as a cry for help became a tool of change and hope. Something so dark flourished into something so good. Today, Emma’s video is used in intervention centers to help save the lives of women at risk.
“If a relationship does not work, walk away. Fast and steady. Walk away. Ask for help. If you don’t have the internet, walk outside your house and scream until you seek help. Talk to family, talk to friends, work colleagues. Do not shut them out. And go to the police. Standing still when there is physical violence will only get you killed. Most importantly, love yourselves more than anything in life. And teach your children to do the same.”
Emma is proof that you can be reborn. Break the silence; it’s your biggest weapon.
